Hampstead has always attracted an eclectic group of people, possibly due to the supposed medicinal spa waters, prior to and during Victorian times, or because it was situated far enough from central London to feel like the countryside, is not known. It may be that as it is the highest point in London above sea level, it has continually appealed to artists, poets and writers by providing inspiration with its expansive views, possibly enhancing or even permitting the creative juices to flow. Unfortunately we will probably never know, whether this had any bearing on the genius of these gifted people, but what it undoubtedly as true today as it was in bygone days, is the areas diverse architecture, hilly landscape and picturesque design bordered by Hampstead Heath, a vast swathe of green, rural delight that further includes a mini zoo. Today Hampstead is as much a draw for thespians, authors, dancers, musicians, intellectuals and the like, probably for the same reasons it has always been popular with an affluent population. Heath Street and Hampstead High Street offer a broad range of shops and cafes, brasseries, pubs and restaurants, meeting places, cinemas, theatres, art galleries, libraries, museums and monuments all centrally located, combined with a ‘village’ and ‘community’ spirit and an exceptional array of property from almost every era. Much of the housing is elegant with classy mansion blocks, majestic buildings that lend themselves to conversion into grand flats, or, for those more opulent amongst us, entire residences that remain in-tact, for families who still enjoy elaborate entertaining. In short, there are homes of all styles and sizes from pied a terres to mansions, from Queen Anne to contemporary and everything in between, plus those whose past inhabitants have included famous or possibly infamous residents.
Additionally, Hampstead offers the highest density of schools anywhere in London, both state and privately funded, that range from nursery age to university ready.
Nowadays of course the transport facilities are also a big draw with the Northern Line and Overground Stations providing access to all routes. The M1 motorway is close by for those needing the North of the UK and the West End and City are within easy reach too.
It is my view, that the allure of Hampstead is attributable to the perfect mix of town living with rural atmosphere, coupled with interests for all age groups, from babes in arms to the elder statesmen and women, who all enjoy the amenities in a different way. It is thus unsurprising that people flock to live here.
