As Christmas is fast approaching and the new year is virtually upon us, the usual newsy column seems somewhat dreary and without much sparkle, so to change things up and give a nod to the seasonal break here is something different for December.

This festive break is a time for cheer

To spend with the one’s we hold so dear

There will be turkey, ‘brussels’ and Christmas ‘pud’

All very fattening, and perhaps not so good!?

Washed down with the vino or cocktails too

It’s Christmas day, what else is there to do?

And then there’s the games, competition abounds

Along with the tensions and delighted sounds

Of those that are winning, or those that trail

Approaching the finish at the speed of a snail.

Times to argue with family, friends and the like

Yet loving the time which is good for the psyche

Strolling down to the local, for a walk before lunch

Rolling back from the pub – now a raucous bunch!

Chatting and talking and laughing out loud

Crackers and noise and larking about

TV and the speech, from Her Maj the Queen

Annoying, aunty Glenda who is rarely seen.

Netflix and Amazon, and all the telly

That we rarely see – to fill our belly!

Children joyous and playing with games and toys

Fun and giggles for all the girls and the boys

Festive lights that twinkle and sparkle bright

With baubles and tinsel that shine in the light

Evening happens upon us and calms all the din

With little ones and house guests snuggled in.

The toys discarded for now, and put away

To reunite with new owners, the following day

The Xmas may be done with the presents all given

The reindeer did well, with Santa now driven

Around the world, for our children’s delight

All completely delivered, in just one night!

Boxing day awakens with a groggy head,

For those willing and able to get out of bed

A stroll or brisk ramble is often desired

To raise the energy levels required

In order to face another family day

With good heart and spirit in every way.

Goodbye to Christmas for another year

It’s been great and fun and full of good cheer

Time now for some rest to relax and recoup

The next few days offer some space, out of the loop

To look to the future and decide on some plan

For our new year resolution, on the first day of Jan.
